Art and crafts help young children explore and express their emotions, share how they relate to their family and friends, talk about their difficulties, their future dreams and aspirations, even if they have not yet developed a full vocabulary to do so. It also develops courage and a healthy self-esteem.
Improved fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination
Creating art and making crafts involves using their hands, holding art materials like pencils, pastels, brushes, or manipulation of materials like clay or mud. All these help in developing muscles that strengthen and support fine-motor skills. Hand-eye coordination is also improved with the practice of art and craft.
Socialization
Art and crafts connect people with each other. These activities can bring together children, foster friendships, and help them develop an appreciation for each other. Sharing and talking about their creations with others can also build communication skills.
Opportunities for decision making
Creating art and craft provides children with opportunities to make many simple and complex decisions: what colors to choose, will they use a pencil or something else to draw, where would this block go, how much clay do they need, and so on.
Improves visual and spatial skills
Many tasks require good visual/spatial skills such as driving, identification of plants and animals, and sporting activities. Art and craft education can help build a strong foundation for these skills when approached correctly during the early years.
